SCOTT
SASSO
Born and raised in downtown Manhattan, Scott Sasso is a native
New Yorker. Although graphic and apparel design never figured
in his career plans while attending Bronx High School of Science
and then Vassar College, Scott says he was nonetheless well
trained for his current profession. As the son of a clothing
designer and painter, Scott recalls "While growing up,
the art and fashion police were always on full alert at my
house."
In 1995, while studying Bio-Psychology, Scott founded 10.Deep.
"I needed an outlet for the half of me that wasn't getting
any attention; I needed some kind of creative outlet so I
started 10.Deep/Tenth." Scott has since done design and
graphic work for the likes of The Gap, Ecko Unlimited, Mecca,
and Reebok. He was one of the founding designers of Akademiks
where he currently holds the title of graphics and concept
director.
STATEMENT
When it comes to issues of man prevailing over his basic nature,
I tend to be a pessimist, believing that man leans towards
selfishness and violence rather than good. As a concept, peace
is simple, yet the conditions that bring it about are complex.
I choose to use two silhouettes, reminiscent of the Old testament
characters David and Goliath. Just as David overcomes seemingly
insurmountable odds in defeating the Philistine giant Goliath,
the prospects for peace prevailing are equally unlikely. The
battle for peace is in fact a battle against man's nature.
Everyone will have to exercise better judgment to bring peace
forth from emotionally charged conflict. Neither side of todays
conflicts are specifically represented here as David or Goliath,
rather each of us must struggle with our ideas and opinions,
a struggle where hate and fear are the giant and reason is
the underdog. Our ability to reason and negotiate are the
glimmer of hope for peace, and the stone in David's sling.
